In the hallowed folds of our nation’s tricolor lies a silent sacrifice and courage of a soldier’s family. While soldiers stand resolute on the frontlines, their families endure battles of their own, often becoming unwitting targets in the cruel strategies of adversaries. Terror threats against the families of Indian soldiers remain a less-discussed yet harrowing aspect of the sacrifices made for our nation’s safety. And unfortunately, many soldiers are attacked off duty. Surprisingly, we don’t find many articles on this topic. Here’s when I thought it’s time to throw some light on this one!
These soldiers usually undergo so much stress around the borders because of the terrors. And to add to it, their families get threatened.
Indian soldiers (off duty) and their families have been often subjected to direct and indirect threats by terror outfits to destabilize the morale of our armed forces. These acts of intimidation infiltrate lives through fear, psychological torment, and, at times, tragic consequences.
Here’s what has happened in past…
One heart-wrenching incident occurred in 2018 when terrorists targeted the family of a serving soldier in Jammu & Kashmir. Rifleman Aurangzeb, a braveheart of the Indian Army, was abducted and killed while on his way home to celebrate Eid with his family. The heinous act sent shockwaves across the nation, serving as a grim reminder of how terror knows no bounds in its cruelty.
In another chilling incident in 2017, terrorists stormed the home of Lieutenant Ummer Fayaz in Kashmir. A young officer with a promising future, Fayaz had returned home to attend a family wedding. He was abducted from the ceremony and later found brutally murdered. His family was left shattered, enduring immense grief and fear in the wake of the tragedy.
In a more recent tragedy in November 2021, Colonel Viplav Tripathi, his wife Anuja, and their young son Abir were ambushed and killed by militants in Manipur. The attack occurred as they were returning from a border post near Myanmar. This horrifying incident highlighted the severe risks faced by soldiers’ families, even during routine movements.
The Digital Weapon!
In recent years, social media has given terror groups another weapon to instill fear. Families have been bombarded with threatening messages, doctored images, or malicious calls, all designed to exploit emotional vulnerabilities. These psychological assaults create a constant state of unease, compelling families to tread cautiously even in their daily lives.
In 2020, a soldier’s wife in Punjab received a series of threats online after her husband was deployed to a sensitive location. The fear was palpable, yet she remained steadfast, refusing to bow down to the enemy’s tactics. Her quiet courage reflected the indomitable spirit that defines these families.
Imagine what really goes inside the heart of a mother who sends her son to serve the nation, the pride of his uniform often mingles with the fear of unseen dangers. In 2019, terrorists entered the home of an off-duty CRPF jawan in Pulwama and mercilessly killed him.
In July 2024, five Indian soldiers were killed when terrorists attacked a military convoy in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kathua district. Among them was Adarsh Negi, whose family had already endured the loss of another son, Major Pranay Negi, just two months prior. This devastating incident underscores the profound sacrifices made by military families, compounded by the unending threats to their safety and well-being.
Despite these tragedies, the families of Indian soldiers stand strong. They live with the knowledge that their loved ones are defending the nation, even as they grapple with threats aimed at breaking their spirit.
